How the escapement and hairspring keep a mechanical watch running
A mainspring stores energy, but the wheel train must not release it all at once. The oscillator and escapement work together to control the rhythm and sustain motion.
Follow the energy path
Energy passes from the mainspring through the train and into the indications. The escapement meters release and supplies impulses to the regulating system. Different escapement types transfer energy differently and cannot be evaluated outside the complete movement.
Why the hairspring matters
The hairspring's restoring force and the balance's behaviour help establish the oscillation. Material, geometry, attachment and condition all matter. Free-sprung and index-regulated arrangements use different adjustment approaches. A photograph cannot establish every implementation detail.
Power and surroundings still affect the system
The mechanism must sustain stable motion while consuming energy. Friction, reserve, temperature, orientation and magnetic fields can influence behaviour. A special component or material name is therefore a starting point for investigation, not a complete performance guarantee.
Common misunderstandings
Do not extend one material's advantages into a claim that the whole watch is immune to every external influence. Open dials and display backs are useful for viewing, but precise diagnosis requires appropriate tools and experience.
Your practical checklist
- Understand energy delivery before the regulating rhythm.
- Separate a structure's name from its implementation.
- Do not infer complete-watch performance from one part.
