Shock, magnetism and water resistance are different capabilities
These protections address different external influences. Having one does not establish the other two, and intended use must also account for the watch's current condition.
What shock protection addresses
Shock-bearing arrangements may protect particular vulnerable movement points, not every component against every impact. Activity, direction and case construction affect the result. A protection label should not prevent inspection after an impact changes the watch's behaviour.
Magnetic protection has its own scope
Materials, shielding and complete-watch design can contribute. Capability belongs to specific descriptions and tests; one hairspring material cannot guarantee immunity under unlimited conditions. Magnetic and water-related problems also require different investigation.
Check each activity separately
For water, check purpose, sealing and control restrictions. For magnetic environments, check the appropriate design and instructions. For impact-heavy activity, consider the movement and attachments. Sports styling is often an appearance category rather than evidence of professional capability.
Common misunderstandings
One uneventful exposure does not prove all future use is safe. Performance labels cannot simply be added into an unlimited promise. Keep a record of conditions and operations if a change appears.
Your practical checklist
- Check shock, magnetic and water capabilities separately.
- Do not replace specific use instructions with styling.
- Record conditions surrounding abnormal behaviour.
