How often should a mechanical watch be serviced?
The appropriate interval depends on the calibre, seals, environment and use. A calendar reminder is useful, but condition matters. Distinguish routine checks from a complete movement service.
Checks and a full overhaul differ
An exterior check, water test, regulation or seal change does not mean the movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned, inspected and lubricated. Ask what work is included, which parts are replaced and how the result is verified.
Changes worth investigating earlier
Persistent rate changes, reduced reserve, unusual winding feel, noise or moisture can justify inspection. They do not all prove that a complete overhaul is required, but waiting for a fixed anniversary may be unhelpful. Continued running also does not establish good lubrication and seals.
Build a service history
Keep the calibre, dates, work performed, test results and wearing conditions. Water exposure, impacts and demanding environments may require a different approach from gentle daily wear. Use manufacturer guidance as a starting point alongside the actual condition.
Common misunderstandings
Neither 'it still runs' nor a prettier instantaneous rate is a complete maintenance goal. Avoid frequent opening merely to chase an unchanged number. Reliable condition and transparent service records matter.
Your practical checklist
- Separate inspections from complete overhauls.
- Keep the work list and test results.
- Investigate clear changes before a fixed interval expires.
